Nikola Tesla or Nicola Tesla – character, thoughts, youth,
research, life in solitude.
Serbian-American inventor who lived and worked in New York City
almost 60 years and died at Hotel New Yorker, in Manhattan, on
January 7, 1943. He designed the first hydro-electric power
plant in Niagara Falls, and there is a monument raised in his
honour nearby.
Who is the greatest and the most important scientist in hystory?
What’s your opinion?
He could have been one of the richest people of his age,
something like Bill Gates today.
Nikola Tesla crossed the Atlantic in 1884 with only 4 cents in
his pocket. He sold the patent rights to his system of
alternatin-current dynamos, transformers, and motors to George
Westinghouse. Only a few years later, due to the contract, he
earned quite a lot of money, and, for some reason, he tore the
contract, giving all the rights to Westinhouse. Had he not did
that, he could have become one of the richest man of his
age, something like Bill Gates today. But this was only a start,
and only one of his patents.
Nikola Tesla – popularity issue.
Nikola Tesla tried to stay out of the eyes of the public.
Scientists usually strive to cooperate with universities, to
give lectures about their inventions and finally to sell them.
However, with Tesla, this was not the case. After only a few
years, he got used to living alone, in solitude, and he remained
living like that.
Inventions:
Nikola Tesla registered about 700 patents, but he had about 1000
more, that he didn’t want to register, or didn’t want people to
know about them. Interestingly, some of his inventions are
wrongly contributed to others. For example, Marconi is much
widely known and recognized for his invention of the radio, but
the fact is that radio was one of many Tesla’s inventions,
before Marconi grabbed the credits for himself. Somethnig
similar happend with X-rays (Roentgen), later with radar etc.
Three periods of Tesla’s life.
There are three clearly distinguished periods in Nikola Tesla’s
life: his youth, his scientific life, and his monk life. The
first and the last period are usually neglected. Here, we will
pay enough attention to all periods of his life respectfully.
The most important invention.
As the most important Tesla’s invention most people point out
the AC (alternating current) system for electrical transmission
that we use in our homes today. However, this is only one of
many important Tesla’s inventions.
